Good Friends

March 29th, 2007

I made a quick trip to Birmingham this week to preach at Lakeside Baptist Church for the closing night of a revival meeting. It was a great evening. The church was very responsive. Just five weeks ago their pastor and my friend Mike McLemore resigned to be the Director of Missions for the Birmingham Association. The church is hungry to find a new pastor . They are just getting the search team put together. Mike was there twenty-five years. They have a huge task.

A few old friends showed up at the service. Teresa Dod and her husband were there. Teresa and I went from 2nd to 12th grade together in Pisgah. We know too much about each other to talk to anyone! Just recently have I reconnected with her after no contact for many years. She and Liz had too much fun talking about guess who. My high school and junior college friend Rex Creswell and his wife Kim came to the meeting. He is a fine Christian layman. He is about to be a grandfather and it is killing him. He thinks he is old. And this weekend his youngest daughter is getting married. He is broke and old!

Then I looked up and Madge Gordon was in the room. Her deceased husband was my scout leader when I was a kid. They were both impact players in my life as I was growing up. I find myself this morning filled with gratitude for good friends. While life goes on, the solid relationships we build are extremely important.

Today as you enter the weekend take a look around you. Does anyone count you as a solid friend? Take time to make a connection. You will be glad you did and the person you touch will be grateful.
