The President of Chick-Fil-A, Dan Cathy, has stated to Baptist Press that his conviction was in favor of traditional marriage. He takes a stand against same-sex marriage. The company does not discriminate against homosexuals.

Mayor Tom Menino of Boston and Mayor Rahm Emanuel of Chicago say Chick-Fil-A is not welcome in their cities. And they will ban them from opening stores.

WHAT? Did these two American cities just become the kingdoms of the mayors? These men are to uphold the United States Constitution. If they don’t like chicken, waffle fries and peach shakes (how could they not?) then don’t buy them. But these men do not have the authority to tell a business they cannot operate in the city.

I wrote the mayor of Boston this week. And I sent a $10 gift card for chicken. You might want to voice your opinion to the mayors. Here are the names and office addresses.

Mayor Thomas Michael Menino
Boston City Hall
One City Hall Plaza
Boston MA 02201

Mayor Rahm Emanuel
City Hall
121 N. LaSalle Street
Chicago, Illinois 60602

And remember…

We are forty days from college football season. And forty days out comes the NCAA ruling on Penn State. They did not give the death penalty but PSU has one foot in the grave. It was a strong judgment against a program that has been seen as one of the good guys in college sports.

I love college football. I hate to see this turn of events. How quickly things can turn when covered up truth is revealed.

Here are some take aways for me:

1. Leadership carries responsibility.

2. Do the right thing even when good friends are involved.

3. Descriptors can be deceiving. HAPPY VALLEY is not happy today.

4. Pay attention to children. They MUST be protected.

5. Statues don’t mean much.

Early this morning James Holmes walked into a movie theater in Colorado and killed 12 people. The scene has captured the world news cycle. It will be gone in a couple of days. Yet the problems of our sin sick world will remain.

Youth ministry in our culture is so important. We must never let up. Training young people is vital. Showing love to teens is a massive need. Sharing the Gospel is imperative. Making disciples is a must.

If you have kids give them a hug tonight. You just never know…what a day holds.

“If you’ve got a business-you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

President Obama spoke those words this week on the campaign trail in Virginia. After I read it I listened to it in context. And that is what the president said. I was amazed.

I do not believe Sam Walton believes someone else built Wal-Mart. I do not believe Truett Cathy believes someone else made Chick-Fil-A happen. And I know Delton and Jean Traylor did not have someone else building the Pisgah IGA for them.

In 1961 my parents moved from their Detroit home to Alabama to open a small grocery store. All of their worldly goods were poured into that venture. They were partners with a family member. They bought out his interest in a few months. Dad learned to be a butcher. Mom kept the books and ran the register. They hired others in the small business. But they did most of the work.

They opened early and stayed late six days a week. No one else did the work for them. Neither the state of Alabama nor the federal government built the IGA. Those two hard working, taxpaying, God fearing Americans made a living building a small business that rewarded them handsomely.

To tell them someone else made it happen is insulting.

Stephen Covey died this week. He wrote the best seller The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. They are:

1. Be proactive
2. Begin with the end in mind
3. Put first things first
4. Think win-win
5. Seek to understand then to be understood
6. Synergize
7. Sharpen the saw- that is undergo frequent self renewal

My folks lived these principles for years and never read the book.

And my parents would add #8-Make the kid work in the store, it is good for him!!

A reminder of Pensacola’s ugly past was torn down this week. The American Family Planning Clinic building on 9th and Creighton is being demolished. Most people have known the place as
” the abortion clinic.”

It was Christmas 1984 when two people bombed the facility. In 1994 Dr. John Britton and James Barrett were killed by Paul Hill at the facility. Abortion has left an ugly scar on Pensacola. Passions run deep on both sides of the issue.

Have no doubt, abortion is murder. It is wrong. It is sin.

However, no person has the right to take the life of another at an abortion clinic. This is murder. It is wrong. It is sin. May God give Christians wisdom to know how to stand against sin.

We are reminded today of how not to do it.

LifeWay Stores of the SBC recently took a movie, The Blind Side, off the shelves. There was a complaint it was offensive due to racial slurs and other language.

Maybe they should pull the SBC Holman Christian Standard Bible. I just read Song of Songs. There is some stuff in there that may not be appropriate for the younger crowd.

Ridiculous you say? I agree.

If the church is going to touch the lost world, we better move out of our pious circles. The Blind Side tells a real life story of hope and courage. God help us if we are caught like Jesus at a well telling a woman of salvation.

And God help us if we bow to cultural correctness.

When one wades into the cultural battle for truth, one must be prepared to be called judgmental. “Judge not” becomes a favorite Bible verse of those who will accuse you of not being tolerant. However, there are 2 kinds of tolerance in our vocabulary. The tradition tolerance is recognizing and respecting other’s beliefs without sharing them. But the “new tolerance” calls for an elevation of all values and beliefs to a position of equal respect. I recently read where this kind of thought was deemed “cool” by a writer. Yet this cool tolerance is a slippery slope.

Those who want same sex marriage to be on the same respect level with Biblical marriage would never grant the same status for the KKK philosophy and racial equality. Nor should they. Yet when Biblical truth is shown to be in disagreement with certain liberal stands we are accused of being intolerant. Truth is the new hate speech.

As Christians we must continue to speak the truth in love.

Andy Griffith died today at age 86. Baby boomers grew up watching the old black and white series from the town of Mayberry.

Andy-always got Barney out of trouble and lied almost every time to do it.

Barney-the deputy with a gun and one bullet.

Aunt B-the lovable lady who kept the home fires burning.

Gomer- the mechanic who could sing.

Otis- the town drunk who made us laugh as he checked into the jail every Saturday night.

Earnest T.Bass-redneck from the hills who came to town and could throw rocks.

Opie-Yes..I have been called this many times. I had the haircut and the freckles.

So do you think the media/TV has any impact on us? WOW! There is power in a good story.

The greatest story ever told is the Gospel. God help us tell it with passion so people always remember!
